In June 2000 Place in History joined
installed ten steel viewing boxes along the railings of the
Union Street Bridge spanning the Gowanus Canal.
Each metal box contained a viewing slot
through which passersby could examine a map illustrating a
vision of the future of the Canal and the neighborhoods surrounding
it.
The maps were drawn up by student participants
in Place in History's
three-day program at the nearby Cobble Hill School of
American Studies.
Students came up with a wide range of
imaginative ideas for transforming the area.
The installation of the boxes was held
to commemorate the grand opening of Place in History's new
office and studio space, located on the banks of the Canal,
at The Box Factory, 543 Union Street, Studio 1B, Brooklyn
NY 11215.
