The Working Waterfront Project

In the spring of 2001, Place in History launched its Working Waterfront Project, which uses Red Hook as a case study for exploring the evolving definition of the working waterfront in New York.

The project involves research into the lives of people who made and make their living on the waterfront. Its aims are to explore how industrial sites and waterfront labor have changed during the last 100 years, and to engage Red Hook residents in discussions about the future of waterfront labor and land use.

Through community workshops, individual interviews, primary research and public installations, Place in History will attempt to chart the economic and physical evolution of one of Brooklyn’s most important waterfront hubs.
